Virtual Sets for OBS (Open Broadcaster Software)
posted by
Our virtual sets are available in a variety of formats – vMix, Photoshop (plus PNG) and special TriCaster® VSE-compatible Photoshop versions.

If you want to use our sets with OBS, choose the version that includes PNG images (it will be labelled Photoshop + PNG format). The sets are supplied as separate image layers that include transparency, so you can either add them one by one to OBS to create your studio set, or use one of the ready-made ‘quick start’ backgrounds.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a file format for images that can be read by most systems, and they’ll load into OBS just fine. PNGs use LOSSLESS compression – so they’re small, but still at original (maximum) quality.
OBS (Open Broadcast Software) compatibility
PLEASE NOTE: There are some things that OBS can’t do ‘out of the box’ (at least at the time of writing this!). So some angles from our virtual sets may require plugins. The main issue is when the sets feature screens or monitors in perspective – see (1) below.
1. screens / monitor images
OBS doesn’t seem to allow you to ’tilt’ or distort layers in 3D, or to add ‘perspective’, without plug-ins. This means that if you want to use one of the (virtual) screens in our studio sets, and you don’t want to add plugins, it will need to be completely (or very nearly) straight on to the camera. There’s still plenty to choose from though! (you can see a few examples below). Otherwise, you could try one of the third-party plugins that offer 3D distortion, like StreamFX (paid) or Exeldro’s 3D Effect (free).
2. desktop reflections
OBS will allow you to flip a layer vertically to create a mirror-image (Transform > Flip Vertical), so you can create duplicate layers and flip them to make the reflections. Our Studios 1 and 1B would normally use UV gradients to distort the layers for reflections, but you should be able to get an almost identical result by positioning your reflections ‘by hand’. If it isn’t working for you, you can reflections in the desktop or floor completely using the supplied opaque layers that cover only the reflective areas.
